Age Proof Your Resume

Posted On Thursday, January 15 2009 at 02:06 PM

Over the years the job market has become increasingly more competitive. Companies are hiring younger and let’s face it, experience isn’t worth what it used to be. So how do you sell yourself to a company without making age an issue and how do you compete with young talent? Easy, follow these steps when creating your next resume and show those companies just how valuable you are:

Don’t Provide Your Compete Work History

When an employer looks at your work history, they are more interested in what you have been doing recently not what you have done over the course of a lifetime. Make sure you have that information available should they request it but it is unnecessary to include absolutely everything.

Focus on A Strong Career Summary

Your career summary is one of the first things an employer reads before deciding whether or not to continue on reading. Make sure it is to the point, you use plenty of action words, you emphasize your experience and show the employer what you can do for them!

Watch Your Language

It is important to emphasize your talents and experience but it is just as important to avoid using “old” words and phrases. For example, “seasoned professional” doesn’t have as much of a ring to it as, “experienced” or , “expert.” Also, you are trying to age-proof your resume so you want to avoid adding statements such as, “30 years experience.”

Your Education Dates

If you received your degree more than ten maybe fifteen years ago, cut out the dates! You definitely want to include that you have a degree, but the dates you received them aren’t that important unless asked for. If you have participated in training courses or programs recently, be sure to include those!

Job Titles

Job titles play an important role in describing responsibility. If at one point you were a secretary for example, update the job title to, “Administrative Assistant.” It is the exact same thing, only your job title has now been updated!
