How To Look Good During An Online Interview

Posted On Friday, January 16 2009 at 07:58 PM

Online interviewing is an up-and-coming hiring trend so if you are one of those many people being interviewed online through a company such as InovaHire.com, make sure you follows these online interview tips:

Online Interview Tip #1: Clear all background clutter

An employer can’t see your home of office, but they can see what is behind you! Make sure you set up in an area where an employer won’t be distracted by the scenery behind you.

Online Interview Tip #2: Imagine you are having an in-person interview

Just because the interview takes place online doesn’t mean it isn’t an interview. Employers are going to be just as critical, if not more, during an online interview. Take a few extra moments to tidy up and your hair and if appropriate, put on that suit or dress blouse.

Online Interview Tip #3: Set up in a quiet area

You may be in a home or office but this is still a professional interview. Try to avoid being cut-off by dogs barking or cats meowing, phones ringing or even a car alarm. Try to avoid putting yourself in a situation you may regret.

Online Interview Tip #4: Lock yourself in a room

I don’t mean literally. Just make sure you are free from interruptions. Your children will have to wait for lunch, your cat can’t sit on your lap and make sure you let your dog out before the interview.

Online Interview Tip #5: Arrive early

Again, this is a professional interview! You wouldn’t be late to an in-person interview so why would you be late to an online interview? Remember, it is better for you to arrive early than have the employer sit there waiting for you! Start off on a good note, log-in first!

Online Interview Tip #6: Test your camera and microphone

Make sure your camera and microphone are properly installed and working prior to the interview. Also, make sure the camera is aimed at your face and not at the wall or your lap! It is also important to make sure you have the proper microphone selected under Settings on your interview screen. It won’t help if the employer can’t hear what you are saying.

Online Interview Tip #7: Look at the camera

The computer can’t see you but the webcam can! As hard as it is to do, look into the camera when you are speaking and at the computer when the employer is speaking!
