Work Like You're Retired
Posted On Wednesday, January 14 2009 at 04:18 PM
We all want to retire early, but as we all know, it is a pretty hard thing to do. What you can do however, is work like your retired! Simply follow these rules:
Work Rule #1: Shut Your Phone Off
That's right, as soon as you leave the office, shut your phone off. Customers will have to wait, co-workers will have to wait, even your boss will have to wait. If you make yourself available, people will take advantage of it. If you make it a point that you only work while at work, they will leave you alone.
Work Rule #2: Leave Your Work at the Office
You are getting paid to work forty hours a week. If you are overworked at the office, that's fine but don't take it home with you! It's not your fault if they don't want to evenly distribute the work load and it's not your fault if they don't want to hire an additional employee. Worried about losing your job? How many people do you know like to be overworked and underpaid? If one company doesn't understand your value, another one will!
Work Rule #3: Say No To Overtime
Getting paid for overtime is never a bad thing, but with overtime comes more hours, less sleep, and more stress. If you are looking to relax a little bit, accepting overtime is the last thing you want to do!
Work Rule #4: Take Your Vacations
If you boss makes you feel bad about taking a vacation, take your vacation anyway then give your notice when you get back. You have earned the time, need the time, and should take the time. Think of it this way, if you are on vacation, your boss isn't!
