What Your Body Language Says During A Job Interview

Posted On Wednesday, January 14 2009 at 03:20 PM

As we all know, actions speak louder than words. During a live interview most individuals focus so much on what they are saying that they forget to pay attention to their body language. So when you are practicing those job interview questions in the mirror, make sure to pay attention to the following:

Eye Contact: Eye contact helps to regulate the flow of communication, increases your credibility, and conveys interest.

Swinging or Rocking Your Leg, or Tapping your Fingers: Shows you are bored or impatient.

Sitting or Standing with Your Arms Crossed: Shows you are cut-off from the conversation and have entered into a defensive mode.

Sitting with Your Legs Apart: Shows you feel open and relaxed.

Placing Your Hand to Your Cheek: Shows you are thinking.

Touching, Slightly Rubbing Your Nose: Shows that you are rejecting or doubting what was just said, or you are lying.

Sitting With Your Hands Clasped Behind Your Head: Shows superiority.

Open Palm: Shows you are sincere and open.

Patting or Fondling Hair: Shows lack of self-confidence and insecurity.

Tilting Your Head: Shows interest.

Pulling or Tugging Your Ear: Shows indecision.

Stroking Your Chin: Shows you are trying to make a decision.

Steepling Fingers: Shows you are authoritative.

Walking with Your Hands in Your Pocket: Shows dejection.

Hands Clasped Behind Your Back: Shows anger, frustration, apprehension.

Body Hunched: Shows you have low self-confidence.

Fidgeting: Shows you are nervous.

Hands on the Desk: Shows you are in agreement.

Leaning in Closer: Shows you are interested.

Looking Away to the Left: Shows you are lying.

Wiping Your Hands on Your Clothes: Shows you are nervous.
