Why Pictures on Your Company or Career Profile Can Help Create a Job Connection

Posted On Wednesday, May 13 2009 at 01:09 PM

If you’re a company posting jobs or a job seeker searching for work online, you might want to seriously consider uploading your picture or company logo to your online profile. Today digital image technology is a great tool to start connecting yourself to the person viewing your profile. Job fairs can give you a person to person connection, but a physical local is extremely limiting compared with an online job board. With the advent of online job boards that act like social networks (such as Inovahire.com where employers can only see job seekers and job seekers can only see employer profiles), why not start the people connection with the first profile view?

A company logo or picture conveys a sense of confidence to job seekers. What does it say about your company when a job seeker sees an empty gray box instead? Instantaneously, a logo can display your company’s sense of style and may include wording that communicates your corporate mission. A high quality logo is the first indication of quality standards for your company to the viewer.    If you don’t have a company logo, uploading your picture indicates to jobs seekers that you’re confident in your company and are proud to be connected with it.

For a job seeker, if you have an online profile without a picture, it’s likely that the employer will not get that immediate connection with you. If you don’t agree and you haven’t looked, just try it yourself. Experiment! Log into a site with viewable profiles and take a look at people you don’t know, with and without pictures. It’s a good bet that you will smile when you see a smiling picture, or if they’re not smiling, you will still connect better than with no picture at all. And likely you won’t care if they’re attractive. After all, a job board isn’t a dating service and people that you really want to work for will want a smart and capable employee that can get along well in their company.

This isn’t to say that there’s no responsibility in selecting your picture. Whether you smile or don’t smile, pick one that represents your best self. Be sure to ask friends and family to advise you on your selection. If the photo includes other people or is in a non-work setting, look at it carefully and ask yourself if that’s what you want to convey to prospective employers. The same type of responsibility for pictures holds true with company logos. A high quality logo speaks volumes, and is a great way to advertise your company.

Making a successful job connection requires connecting with a real person. If you’re advertising yourself as an empty gray box with text, think about how easy it is today to upload a digitized image that may help you quick-start a job connection.

I went to LinkedIn to try it out and I did prefer profiles that had pics. I guess I should upload a pic..

It's all about branding! I feel that a picture associated with a resume truly helps me get to know a candidate even if I haven't actually made the initial contact.
